Chris goes to IKEA for the first time.

Over the weekend, I went into an IKEA for the very first time. There, I said it. I was carrying that Swedish albatross around my neck for too long. What a relief! I can dance again!!! Below, I give a detailed account of my journey.

The Preparation:
Oftentimes, at a casual get-together, the conversation will segue from Arcade Fire to misquoted NPR stories to recent IKEA purchases. Imagine my embarrassment, reader! I would nod my head, mumble a Swedish-sounding word and wait for the conversation to take its natural course (quoting of Coen brothers’ movies). This was not a sustainable lifestyle. I wanted to talk about overly-stylized futons, too!

Ingvar Kamprad

To prepare for my first visit to IKEA I did a little research. First, I checked their Wikipedia page. It turns out that IKEA isn’t just a Swedish nonsense word. It stands for Ingvar Kamprad (the store’s founder), Elmtaryd (the farm where he grew up) and Agunnaryd (his hometown). Fascinating! Also, I learned that Ingvar Kamprad started IKEA in 1943 at the age of 17. Pardon me? Some teenager started this multi-billion dollar operation in the middle of World War II? In Sweden? Wikipedia tells me that Ingvar Kamprad is still alive, has a net worth of 6 BILLION DOLLARS, and is a noted philanthropist. Perhaps he is but I have a sneaking suspicion that he is also a Bond Villain. Prove me wrong!

The Experience:

I arrive at the store on a blustery Sunday afternoon. The building stretches to the horizon and appears to bend slightly with the curvature of the earth. There are very few windows and everything is blue and yellow (a nod to the Swedish flag…I am a FONT OF KNOWLEDGE). To blend in with the chic Swedish clientele I am wearing a thick wool turtleneck and a yellow Speedo. Many shoppers stop to admire my dedication to Swedish culture. My girlfriend pretends not to know me (again, because of the admiration).

The Road to Perdition.
As I approach the building I notice that there is one entrance and one exit. This is not an accident! All IKEA stores are specifically designed to herd customers past every square inch of merchandise. Do you want to pick up some new silverware? SCREW YOU! YOU WILL LOOK AT THESE BOOKSHELVES!!!

Upon entering the store the first thing I notice is a play area called Småland. Parents leave their children in Småland where, I assume, the children are forced to write the assembly instructions for all IKEA furniture. I can hear a lonely harmonica. God bless you children of Småland, this is not the life you chose. After a short escalator ride to the second floor I am in the showroom. I consult a map at the top of the escalator. The approved path leads through Living Rooms, Wall Units, Work IKEA, Kitchens, Bedrooms, Bathrooms, and Children’s IKEA. Any deviation from this path will result in death (if you’re lucky). I hoist up my Speedo, screw my courage to the sticking place, and enter the fray.

Each area showcases several furnished rooms, each decorated in a different style. The “apartments” that we walk through are modern looking and extremely Europe-y. I am expecting Jason Bourne to pop out at any moment and fight me. After the first few rooms it is becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate the furniture from the art. EVERYTHING TURNS INTO A BED. EVERYTHING HAS A WEIRD, OPAQUE DOOR ON IT. NONE OF THE TABLES HAVE FOUR LEGS. I overcompensate and try to sit on everything. I lay out placemats on the mattresses. I pee in a desk drawer. This is too much.

What IS this?

Let’s pause for a moment to discuss the names of IKEA products. Apparently, our friend Ingvar Kamprad had trouble remembering item numbers so he started using whatever batshit name popped into his head. To use an ACTUAL EXAMPLE: lighting fixtures are named using terms from music, chemistry, meteorology, measures, weights, seasons, months, days, boats, and nautical items. This is completely insane. The best selling bookcase at IKEA is called BILLY. THE BOOKCASE IS CALLED BILLY. People are called BILLY. Bookcases should be called BOOKCASE. I imagine that most products were named when Ingvar locked himself in a room with an assortment of Dr. Seuss books, a furniture catalog, and 6 sheets of LSD.

After 3 days and 3 nights I make it out of the showroom…now to take an escalator downstairs. There is even more stuff down here and it isn’t even arranged nicely. It’s just in boxes…so many boxes. I expect to see the exit but it never appears. I can smell meatballs but I can’t see them. Are they a smell mirage? I make the decision to eat my shoe leather before resorting to cannibalism. You might kill me IKEA but you won’t make me a monster! Days turn into weeks. Weeks turn into months. I befriend a lampshade named SPORG. We understand each other. Finally, I stumble upon a great warehouse. Towering shelves are stacked high with boxes and (I can only assume) the lost Ark of the Covenant. Dead eyed men shuffle past me…all of them talking to lampshades and chewing on shoes. But I can see light! Natural light!!!

I run as fast as my emaciated body will carry me. A friendly employee asks me if I’d like to look through the clearance section. I punch her square in the face. I stagger past the cash registers and the siren song of cinnamon buns and make it to the exit. I’m free. Dear Lord, I’m free!

Final Thoughts: All in all, it was a very nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I bought a wastebasket for $1.99.

Chris finally makes Led Zeppelin accessible to stoners.

Hello! It’s very nice to see you again. I assume that your hair looks nice today. Those pants make you look thin and attractive to the opposite gender. Or the same gender! Whichever gender you prefer, THEY LIKE YOUR PANTS! The weekend is almost here, casual reader! Let me be up front…I probably won’t write much on the weekends. I’m not your damn butler! I will not drop my personal plans at a moment’s notice to fetch you tea and cucumber sandwiches! Did you assume that I was a butler because of my monocle? Well, that’s probably my fault. Monocles are very butlery. I’m sorry I snapped at you.

However, I do pledge to write a little something every Friday for your perusal. Friday installments will be a little more loosey goosey than usual (impossible!). I’ll undo my cravat, affix my casual monocle, sip some Four Loko, and just shoot from the hip. Basically, I’m lazy on Fridays so I’ll write about whatever requires the least amount of effort. How do you like that work ethic, Greatest Generation?

Gibberish.

Today, I have taken the lyrics of Stairway to Heaven and ran them through Google Translate about 15 times. I went through Chinese, French, Vietnamese, Russian, Yiddish, and a host of others. If you don’t know the song Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin follow these steps: 1) Spend more time using your cell phone. 2) Listen to Ke$ha and discuss her music with strangers. 3) Ironically wear a Members Only jacket. 4) Get ready to have a lot of regrets on your deathbed. Anyhow, enjoy and have a great weekend, Internuts! I’ll catch you on the flippity flop…

Stairway to Heaven

There. Where are the ladies? The glittering gold,
And in her purchase of the ladder is paradise.
When she is, she knows if the stores are not open
What is the word that she can get what she is looking for.

Oh, oh, and in her purchase of the ladder is paradise.

There is a wall sign, but she wanted to make sure
You know, sometimes it is because this word means.
In a tree in the slot, with Songbird, sing:
Sometimes all of our thoughts can be misguided.

Oh, I wonder
Oh, it surprised me.

I feel when I look to the west,
And my spirit is upset for travel.
I think that I have saw plumes of smoke and trees
The sound of that bear watching.

Oh, I wonder
Oh, I am quite surprised by this.

The rumor is, as soon as possible if we all call the tune
Then they whistle us to reason.
And a new dawn for those who stand around
The forest echoes with smiles.

If there is noise in the bushes
Do not panic
Queen, it's just a spring clean in May.
Yes, there are two possible paths, but in the long term
There is still time to change their habits.

This makes me think.
Ooooooh...

Ringing in his head, he does not go,
If you do not know:
The Piper associated his call.

Nice lady, can you hear the wind blow,
Did you think it?
Your manager is located within a whisper of wind.

As a way to wind down we take the road.
Our shadow is higher than ourselves
Woman…we all know.
What machines create white light and hope that shows...
Like everything else becomes the gold.
And if you listen hard to songs they will come.
Location is one at a time, even when the rock and roll.

And in her purchase of the ladder is paradise.

Chris eats a hamburger.

The Food:
The BK Stuffed Steakhouse Burger

Gross.

The Pitch:
“When you take a flame-broiled patty, stuff it with jalapenos and cheddar cheese on the inside, top that with spicy poblano sauce, ripe tomato and crisp iceberg lettuce, and somehow fit it all on a toasted, corn-dusted bun ... well, you've got yourself a fire hazard. What we're saying is we had to get the fire marshal's permission to sell this thing. Did we bribe him with the one-of-a-kind BK STUFFED STEAKHOUSE™ Burger? Our lawyers won't let us tell you. Limited time only. At participating restaurants.” - The Official Burger King Website

First Impressions:
The ubiquitous TV spots for this burger piqued my interest immediately (I’m awaiting my cash prize for using “ubiquitous” and “piqued” in the same sentence). As we all know, fast food on television is usually shellacked, primped and airbrushed until it looks so delicious that our willpower collectively implodes. I’ve been tricked into buying more Cheesy Gordita Crunches than I care to admit. But every single commercial spot for the BK Stuffed Steakhouse makes it look ABSOLUTELY REPULSIVE. There is random crap floating in the burger patty...like cataracts in a rheumy eye. If you haven’t seen the commercials, let me paint you a picture. If a cow was thrown from a cargo plane at cruising altitude, fell to the earth, smashed into a LEGO factory and the LEGO-infused carrion was then shoveled onto a toasted, corn-dusted bun…well, you’ve got yourself a BK Stuffed Steakhouse, friend!

I was also curious about the “poblano sauce” referenced above. I typed “poblano sauce” into Google and the first returned result was “mole sauce.” Alright, Burger King, you have my attention. It’s about time we started mashing those sightless vermin into a sauce worthy of this disgusting burger! I imagine that the moles just wanted to stay home to finish their spring cleaning. Soon enough, Ratty came knocking and then it was off to see Mr. Toad at Toad Hall. As is so often the case, light-hearted anthropomorphic adventures quickly snowballed into mole genocide at the hands of the Burger King Kids Club. It’s a tale as old as time. But alas, after actually reading the article I learned that “mole” is just Spanish for “sauce”. I am crestfallen.

Getting Acquainted:
I stop by my friendly, neighborhood Burger King to obtain one of these culinary delights for myself. It only costs $3.99! What an age we live in. It turns out the Stuffed Steakhouse has 600 calories. The Double Whopper with Cheese has 990. Guess who’s eating healthy tonight? I would raise my left arm to indicate myself but it is completely numb. Also, I taste copper…HEALTHY!

The burger arrives swaddled in a paper wrapper which sagely advises: “Have it your way.” That’s good advice, burger paper. I may need to rethink my entire life. Maybe I’ll get some books on Eastern medicine. Buy a van. Get really into the sixties. I’m having it MY way! You’ve changed me for the better, sloppy burger wrapper!

When fully disrobed from the paper (Namaste!) the burger doesn’t look half bad. The exterior of the patty is so charred that you barely notice the creepy hunks of cheese and produce. The bun looks pretty tasty. The mole sauce, lettuce, and tomato look a little shady but no worse than any other fast food sandwich. The aroma is comparable to a studio apartment in Arizona…a little spicy and sort of depressing. Now to take a bite…

The Taste:
Hmmmm…let me just…hmmmmmmm. The cheese and pepper bits are judiciously scattered throughout the burger. The beef patty tastes like standard BK but, against all odds, the added lumps actually make it taste better! Whaattt?!? The jalapenos give everything a pleasant heat but don‘t overwhelm. The veggies are a little soggy but that‘s to be expected. The bun is quite good (called it). The mole sauce is a standout…delicious! Overall, this is a tasty burger. A TASTY BURGER.

Verdict:
Don’t get me wrong. This is not good food. It is bad food. But, it’s pretty good fast food. If I found myself at a rest stop with $4 in my pocket and a complete disregard for my circulatory system I would not regret picking one up. And let’s not forget that this particular burger is breaking new ground…sticking it to The Man…tilting the scales…rocking the Casbah. This is the first food IN HISTORY that’s more appetizing in reality than it is on TV. I just blew your mind.

I hope this has been a valuable service, dearest reader. I’d love to get some recommendations for more food to try out. Please leave me a comment or send an email. Keep on keepin’ on, Internuts! Until next time…

Chris watches a Lifetime movie.

Your eyes have not deceived you, gentle reader. This evening I will be watching and writing about Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy. “But Chris, aren’t Lifetime movies for women? What are you, a woman?” Take it easy, Mel Gibson. Despite my child bearing hips, I am all man…just ask your mother. POW! I apologize.

As an ongoing feature of this site, I will actively seek out the sort of television that I’d normally avoid at all costs. Feel free to send me suggestions for future shows and I will take them under advisement. I might even tackle a full season if the show isn’t too horrendous. I’ll keep you posted. But enough foreplay…let’s get to it, shall we?

Disclaimer: I am going to be describing THE ENTIRE PLOT OF THIS DUMB MOVIE. If you don’t want this cinematic gem to be spoiled for you I suggest you go elsewhere. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Before Viewing:
Right out of the gates…Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy is a terrible title. I would have gone with Amanda Knox: Olive Garden of Lies or Amanda Knox: Soup, Salad, Breadsticks…and Murder!*

Hayden Panetierre
Hayden Panetierre (Pronounced: Panera Bread) plays the titular Amanda Knox. Ms. Panera Bread was on Heroes and has probably done other things as well! She is cuter than an ice cream truck full of kitten sneezes. I refuse to believe that this adorable little wood nymph could commit murder. Unless, that is, she murders people with her dimples! Does she? I really have no idea what this movie is about.

Marcia Gay Harden plays Amanda’s mother. Marcia Gay Harden was really good in The Mist. I wish I was about to watch The Mist right now. I wonder if I have The Mist on DVD…

I’m not going to lie. I just watched The Mist. Alright, let’s get this over with…

*My knowledge of Italy is based entirely on Olive Garden commercials.

During Viewing:
Alright! I’m watching a Lifetime movie! I am immediately reminded that it’s “based on a true story.” We first meet Amanda (Panera Bread) and some Italian guy who looks like Harry Potter. They are hanging around outside Amanda’s apartment in Italy when some cops show up. There’s a broken window in the apartment and blood in the bathroom. In no time they discover the body of Amanda’s roommate, Meredith, upstairs. Oh snap.

A murderer.
Whoosh, we’re traveling back in time (LOST style). It is now a month and a half earlier. Amanda is going to college in Perugia, Italy. Amanda meets Harry Potter (his real name is Raffaele) at a concert and the two fall in love. They feed each other chocolate covered strawberries and sleep together IMMEDIATELY. Amanda actually says that her new boyfriend looks like Harry Potter. I feel vindicated. Amanda and her roomie, Meredith, have an argument about cleaning the apartment. This movie is leading me to believe that someone is about to be murdered because they like a tidy home. This cannot possibly be the case. Right?

Boom, we’re back in the present. Amanda and Harry Potter are waiting to be questioned by the police. They are getting hot and heavy IN THE POLICE STATION. Amanda starts doing cartwheels in the HALLWAY OF THE POLICE STATION. Hayden Panera Bread is still as cute as a baby sleeping in a mitten but she is making poor decisions! Amanda is interviewed by the police and explains that she thought the pool of blood on the bathroom floor was menstrual blood. Yikes. I wish I was still watching The Mist.

The Italian fuzz do some sleuthing and match up DNA and footprints and whatnot to prove that Panera Bread and Italian Harry Potter were in on the murder. This would be a shock if they weren’t acting like murderers this whole time. Meanwhile, the cops pick up an entirely different guy who we haven’t seen before and say that he was in on the murder too. I no longer know what is happening and start playing with my phone. Apparently, this new guy lived downstairs in the same apartment building and used to sell Amanda pot. Ok, fine.

Panera Bread, Italian Harry Potter and pot dealer guy are all put in jail. While we’re waiting for the trial Amanda has a meeting with the prison doctor who tells her that she is HIV positive. What? Wait. What? Two minutes later the doctor tells her it was a mix-up and she doesn’t have HIV. If I were being paid a handsome salary to edit this movie I would probably have spent some more time on this. Just saying…

The trial has started and the courtroom scenes JUST WON‘T STOP. I can feel my hair growing. Again, there would be much more suspense at this point if the accused murderers were not so obviously the actual murderers. Italian judges wear hilarious robes with little tassels on them. The judges’ robes have been the best part of the movie thus far. Pot dealer guy elects for a “fast-track trial” which is apparently a thing. I imagine it’s like the fast pass you can get at Disney World but with prison instead of spinning teacups at the end. Pot dealer guy gets 30 years in jail. Panera Bread and Italian Harry Potter look more and more guilty over the course of the trial. The verdict is: GUILTY. They get 26 and 25 years, respectively. Panera Bread is sad (but still adorable). Marcia Gay Harden is sad. I am sad that I watched this. Fade to black.

Final Thoughts:
So, if this movie is to be believed, AMANDA KNOX MURDERED HER ROOMMATE BECAUSE SHE DIDN’T WANT TO CLEAN UP AROUND THE HOUSE?!? The movie itself was not as bad as I thought it would be. Just imagine a really, really, really long episode of Law and Order. In Italy. Ugh. Well, thanks for stopping by, my steadfast friend. Until next time!

Salutations.

Oh, hello.  I didn’t notice you there.  If you are reading this WebLog (or Weblo) get ready for a shock…you are on the internet.  Right now!  AT THIS VERY MOMENT!  Take a moment to compose yourself.  Feel better?  Now take a look around and absorb your new surroundings.  No doubt you have already noticed the constant patrolling of the eRobots, the great flapping wings of the Cyber-dactyls, the dripping jaws of the beady-eyed Googles, Charlie Sheen.  Pay no mind to these abominations because we’re on the World Wide Web together, friend.  Take my hand and I will keep you safe.

You may be asking yourself, “How can I trust this stranger?  I’ve been burned by so many Nigerian princes in the past.”  Relax, idiot.  I have been using the “net” regularly since 1994 and I am, to the best of my knowledge, not a Nigerian prince.  How do you like those credentials, Zuckerberg?  It is my solemn promise to you, my trusted companion, that I will post a brand new Weblo every week for your greedy consumption.  I plan to write about whatever topic happens to be skittering through my brain.  I’d like to talk with some interesting people about some interesting subjects.  Does that mean I’ll be interviewing Kanye West?  Yes.  Will I win a Pulitzer Prize?  You bet your ass I will.  Will I cure all known diseases?  That’s foolish. YOU'RE BEING FOOLISH!

So, buckle up, Internuts!  The future is bright and our course uncharted!!! Hazzah!!!
